Messi's name painted on Ronaldo's statue in Portugal

As if losing the 2015 Ballon D'Or wouldn't have hurt enough, a statue of Cristiano Ronaldo was violated on Monday.

Since 2007, the two players have raised their respective games to another level and dominated football, wowed millions worldwide and have rightly won many laurels.

Messi collected his record fifth Ballon d'Or title at Zurich on Sunday and has enjoyed tremendous success since his family relocated from Argentina to Barcelona with him as a 13-year-old. Oliver Kahn and Manuel Neuer made the podium but no goalkeeper has ever won it [since Lev Yashin in 1963].

The Argentine dethroned three-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo in adding to his four consecutive awards from 2009 to 2012.

Messi's jersey number also was tagged with red paint on Ronaldo's full-figured statue in Funchal, the Portuguese striker's hometown.

"On our part, there has always been admiration and respect".

"Right now our greatest need is to strengthen the attacking line but I would like bring in reinforcements across the board", Luis Enrique told a news conference previewing Wednesday's King's Cup last 16, second leg at city rivals Espanyol.

"Lionel enjoyed that trip", he said.

"Both won it way before the real start of the digital age".

"I think he is among the best".

"My idea is to finish my career in my home and my home is Barca".

She had guided the US to women's World Cup glory in Canada last summer, beating Japan 5-2 in the final.
