Mayweather dominates McGregor in 10-round affair

Floyd Mayweather knocking out Conor McGregor

"Our game plan was to take our time, go to him, let him shoot his shots early and then take him out down the stretch", said the 40-year-old Mayweather.

Mayweather is followed as he smiles and jokes with the camera in the clip, before holding up the cheque, which will only boost his already astonishing fortune.

Mayweather stopped McGregor in the 10th round, saving Las Vegas sportsbooks from what would have been one of their most expensive losses in history. "I love a good fight, and tonight was a damn good fight".

Afterwards, he announced his retirement with a record of 50 wins in 50 professional bouts with 27 by way of stoppage.

Mayweather, 40, won the fight via TKO in the 10th round, but McGregor has received high praise for his performance. The Irishman landed 111 of the 430 punches he threw, compared to Manny Pacquiao's 81 out of 429 when the Filipino fought Mayweather in 2015. In the ring, you can't beat a boxer, it's not as easy as everybody thought it would be, just because McGregor is a fighter.

McGregor came out firing during the first three rounds, relying on an unorthodox stance and unconventional moves to catch Mayweather off guard.

On Saturday night, McGregor gleefully rehashed the story of the making of the Mayweather fight, which sceptics first said was impossible.

Many had predicted McGregor would barely last a round with one of the greatest fighters of all-time, so he has earned some credit to have stayed the course for as long as he did.

A late-round Mayweather knockout was the best-case scenario for Station Casino sportsbooks and resulted in one of the biggest wins ever for Art Manteris, vice president of race and sports for Station, and a 38-year Las Vegas veteran bookmaker.

"I get a little wobbly when I'm tired". The end was near. There's a lot on the line here - he should have let me keep going until I hit the floor.

"He's a tough competitor, but I was the better man tonight".

Although Mayweather is guaranteed $100m, this is expected to swell to something approaching $200m (£155.2m) by the time ticket sales, pay-per-view income and other royalties are factored in.

The numbers are even rosier for Mayweather, whose minimum purse of US$100 million matched the career-high guarantee he made for the Pacquiao fight.

As for his immediate plans?

Asked to compare MMA with boxing, he laughed maniacally and declared: "The check is not bad". I've multiple titles in the UFC to think about. "I'm sure there'll be options in boxing".
